Learn More About Tires and Wheels

Tires

Car and truck tires come with three basic designations aside from the tire size: warranty, Uniform Tire Quality Grading and speed rating. The warranty contains the number of miles the tire is expected to drive before wearing out and ranges between 35,000 and 85,000 miles.

UTQG grades the tire’s treadwear, traction and temperature. Treadwear is designated by a number. Traction is designated by the letters “AA”, “A”, “B” and “C” with “AA” being the best designation. Temperature grades are designated by the letters “A”, “B” and “C”.

Wheels

There are a few things to know when choosing car, suv, and truck wheels. The size of wheels and tires can affect your vehicle. So, before you choose a new wheel it is a wise idea to understand exactly how this works.

If you go with a larger size rim and tire your speedometer and odometer will be slightly inaccurate. This is not a big deal, but you should get your speedometer calibrated afterward.

Another thing to consider is tire size. If you have wider tires with thicker tread your gas mileage will go down slightly. However if you have lower profile tires on a larger rim it will generally be the same. All these factors are important to consider when shopping for wheels.

Trailer Tires & Wheels

Shopping for trailer tires and wheels is not the same as shopping for car tires.

The tires must rated for the weight and the type of driving the trailer will be exposed to. If the trailer will carry a load of 5,000 pounds, the tires must be rated to carry that kind of weight and have a class rating for the types of roads used.

Proper inflation is essential so the tires can safely carry the trailer load and allow the tow vehicle to handle safely. For tandem axles, all four tires must match in size, wear rating and weight rating.
